To watch Jaeden (center) and his pal RJ (right) in medical play session with
Robyn Chow-Hoy, you'd think they were at home playing in his bedroom.
Instead, they were in Jaeden's hospital room, acting out medical procedures.
Jaeden is a big fan of Child Life Specialist Robyn -- and for good reason.
She makes the hospital a fun place! Jaeden could hardly contain his laughter,
as he playfully placed band-aids on everyone's head -- a special accessory
for the two boys following chemotherapy. Whoever thought the hospital
could be so much fun?

Support Hawaii's Children's Hospital.
From Child Life Specialists to Pediatric Emergency Medicine Physicians
These are the caring medical specialists that a sick child deserves -- and these are the specialists
you will find at Kapi'olani Medical Center, Hawaii's only children's hospital.
Children's hospitals represent less than 5 percent of all hospitals in the nation
Of the 3 million children hospitalized every year, only about one-third receive care in a children's hospital
Here in Hawaii, our children are fortunate. We have a dedicated hospital right here in our islands to care for our keiki.
I would like to give a gift to support a program such as Child Life Services, that makes Kapi'olani Medical Center a truly special medical facility for Hawaii's keiki.

Celebrating 100 Years
of Caring for Kids
In 2009, Kapi'olani Medical Center for
Women & Children will celebrate 100
Years of Caring for Children. This yearlong
centennial celebration will give hospital
patients, staff, and volunteers a chance
to commemorate pediatric excellence
in Hawaii.
The hospital's history of caring for
Hawaii's sickest children began in 1909
when Kauikeolani Children's Hospital
first opened. At the time, two out of seven
children in Hawaii died before their first
birthday.
Greatly concerned, James R. Judd, M.D.
and Sanford Dole began a communityled
effort to build a children's hospital
in Hawaii. Albert and Emma Kauikeolani
Wilcox donated $50,000, which the
community soon matched. It took two
more years of planning and fundraising
until Kauikeolani Children's Hospital
opened its doors in 1909.
In the 1970s, Kauikeolani Children's
Hospital merged with Kapi'olani Hospital
to form what is now known as Kapi'olani
Medical Center for Women & Children.
As Hawaii's only pediatric hospital,
Kapi'olani looks forward to providing
specialty care to Hawaii's children for
many more years to come.
The Hawaiis Miracles 2009 calendar, with photography by
Joanne Barratt of Island Style Images, is now available for

Center for Women & Childrens 100-year history of caring
for Hawaiis keiki. Thanks to sponsorship from First Hawaiian
Bank and The Honolulu Advertiser, 100 percent of the
purchase price will benefit the hospitals programs and
services. Calendars may be purchased for $15 at
Foodland, Sack N Save, the Kapi'olani gift shop or online
at www.kapiolani.org while supplies last. A shipping
and handling fee applies to online orders.
