Ilima Montoya was first diagnosed with cancer when she was just 5 months old. Doctors found cancer in the baby’s liver, lungs and brain. Ilima underwent surgery and six months of intensive chemotherapy.
But, the battle didn’t end there.
At age 3, Ilima was diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumor. She endured months of grueling chemotherapy, and once again triumphed.
Now 14 years old and in remission, Ilima is living cancer-free, thanks to the research protocols and state-of-the-art care she received at Kapi‘olani Medical Center.
Research brings state-of-the art treatment to Hawaii’s kids.
Thirty years ago, when children were diagnosed with cancer, only about 30 percent survived. Today, more than 75 percent are overcoming cancer, in great part due to the availability of clinical trials. These research studies represent the latest cancer treatment available in the U.S:
Kapi‘olani has nearly 100 clinical trials available for the treatment of children’s cancer.
Eighty-five percent of Kapi‘olani’s pediatric cancer patients who qualify are taking advantage of one of these new treatment protocols.
Clinical trials are offered in partnership with the University of Hawaii and the Cancer Research Center.
Kapi‘olani needs your support! Your gift will help us to continue our research so that we can offer the latest treatment available to Hawaii’s kids.
