A recent addition to Kapi‘olani Medical Center for Women & Children’s
medical team is bringing smiles to the faces of children and their parents.
Tucker, a specially trained golden retriever, is at the center of Kapi‘olani’s
new Animal Assisted Therapy (AAT) Program. AAT can motivate and help
a child reach his or her full potential. Yasha Vovin and others like him,
burdened with demanding weekly physical therapy sessions, now look
forward to visits, which feel more like play sessions than work sessions.
Tucker also makes daily hospital “rounds” to comfort the babies, children,
and teens on our pediatric units.
Caring for kids takes more than just medicine and technology.
Kapi‘olani’s Animal Assisted Therapy Program is just one of the many child-friendly programs developed by
hospital staff to help children going through treatment or recovering from a traumatic injury. We realize
that a hospital can be a frightening place for kids. But what makes Kapi‘olani truly special is the extra effort
taken to put children at ease. Our Child Life Specialists offer art therapy, computer games, and even help
with homework. They arrange visits from celebrities, such as professional football players, champion surfers,
actors, and singers. Children can “drive” themselves to treatment in a battery-operated mini-Hummer.
And the holidays are celebrated with carolers, Trick-or-Treat Lane, and parties that spread the cheer.
