Kapi`olani Kids; The Latest in Children's Health From Kapi`olani Children's Hospital

About 46 babies are born premature each week in Hawaii.

In 2000, Madison Charles was one of the 850 babies admitted to Kapi`olani’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. She was delivered more than 10 weeks early by C-section on Feb. 21. This date marked the beginning of the “rollercoaster ride” for her mother and father, Yavette and Glenn. The couple would watch as their baby made progress and then suffered repeated complications. But through it all, they found comfort in the physicians and nurses who were always there for them. From the medical expertise of Kapi`olani’s neonatologists, to the specially trained nurses and supportive social workers, to the latest in medical technology, Kapi`olani provided everything Madison needed to grow up to celebrate her 5th birthday this year.

What makes Kapi`olani’s NICU so special?

  • Kapi`olani cares for the smallest, sickest newborn babies in Hawaii.
  • The NICU cares for about 850 babies each year.
  • It is the only unit in the state with neonatologists, physicians trained just to care for pre-term and seriously-ill babies, on-site 24–7 to attend to baby immediately at delivery and in the weeks and months that follow.
  • Kapi`olani is designated by the state as providing the highest level of care for newborn babies in Hawaii and the Pacific.
  • Other Oahu and Neighbor Island hospitals look to Kapi`olani in cases where babies require this highly specialized care.
