A birth defect diagnosed during pregnancy leads Hilo mom to Kapi`olani.
Hilo resident Jaimie Kuwahara was in the second trimester of her pregnancy
when her unborn baby was diagnosed with a rare birth defect. Her prenatal
tests indicated that there was a problem. An ultrasound then revealed that the
baby’s intestines were protruding from the abdomen. This rare condition,
called gastroschisis, occurs in just 1 of 4,000 pregnancies. In fact, many pediatric
conditions are considered uncommon. Thankfully, gastroschisis and other
childhood conditions are familiar territory for Kapi`olani’s pediatric surgeons
and specialists. As a result, Jaimie delivered her daughter Mya at the Kapi`olani
Family BirthCenter. After corrective surgery and
several weeks in intensive care and the intermediate nursery, Mya was ready
to go home to Hilo with mom.
