Teresa Dillon was born with Seckel syndrome, which causes delays in a child's overall development. Children with Seckel syndrome experience a range of disabilities; some never stand or walk.
Three-year-old Teresa is beating the odds. Through physical therapy, she is now beginning to walk with assistance, and her parents anticipate she will run one day!
In addition, Teresa has benefited greatly from Kapi'olani's feeding, augmentative speech and occupational therapy. For children with physical or developmental disabilities, Kapi'olani's Rehabilitation Program can help them hear their first sound, speak their first word and go beyond their physical limitations to experience the world around them.
Helping our children live life to its fullest.
While your first thoughts of the Children's Hospital may be of saving lives, Kapi'olani also plays a critical role in helping children with physical and developmental challenges. For these children who suffered a loss of function due to a serious injury or illness, or were affected at birth, rehabilitation therapy can open the door to the world.
For the child who has difficulty speaking, Kapi'olani provides speech therapy and assistive communication devices to allow her to communicate.
For the child who has difficulty walking, Kapi'olani provides special motorized transport to allow him independence to see the world around him.
For the child who has difficulty eating, Kapi'olani provides highly specialized therapy to assist her in building the skills necessary to eat on her own.
